If you’re a geek like myself then you have probably seen many television shows that fall flat dealing with the topic of cyber security in this day of the Internet of things. Two shows that I watched were Scorpion and CSI Cyber and both of them made me laugh. I mean listening to the cast speak all the correct buzz words and having flashing gadgets does not make a great, or even good television series. If you have not seen either of these shows, give the following trailers a watch.

Mr. Robot

With the release of the pilot of Mr. Robot from USA Network has changed the cyber television series as we know it. As I sat and watched the pilot I was amazed the use of the technical language in a fictitious scenario playing out. The technical specifications and the cyber attacks aligned perfectly to that that occurs in the real world.

The show centers around Mr. Robot, Elliot, a main character that is a cyber-security engineer in his day job and a grayhat by night. Elliot is approached by a shady group to help destroy the Evil Corp who the company he works for to protect. The choices he has to make are though provoking and in many ways it forces you as the viewer to thinks about what is playing out on the screen.

How accurate is Mr. Robot? That question I suppose will be answered as the season progresses, but so far I have found it to be much more accurate than its predecessors. Of course, someone that I know who is a Linux administrator pointed out to me that the Linux commands Elliot used to hide the file that he was asked not to delete was not accurate.

Everything being said and done I hope Mr. Robot turns out to be a great series.
